If you evaluate it from the first perspective, it is not a self-sufficient film. When I say self-sufficient I mean that its success is not independent of the audience demographic. In the Asian market where fantasy blended with intense drama is preferred, movies like Baahubali do well. Even though action sequences and CGI may not be done with finesse, the audience accepts it more easily than say a western audience where CGI technology has blurred the lines between reality and special effects. I am focussing on this particular aspect because the aesthetics of the film is what has elevated a relatively simple story to an adventure. Without it, it would probably be one of those clichéd period dramas with a predictable plot. So, from the first perspective Baahubali is a fairly ordinary film.
Now look at it from the second perspective and everything changes. For an audience which has never been exposed to such a scale of fantasy production except the TV adaptations Mahabharata and Ramayana, Baahubali was a novel idea and an intriguing story. It had all the elements that an Indian audience has a penchant for - a superhuman protagonist, a fallen mother, a strong enemy and an intermittent struggle for justice. Emotionally, S S Rajamouli ticks all the right boxes that would grip the audience and make them invest in the characters and the story till the very end. Add never before seen action sequences and some the best CGI in any Indian film, and you're set for a smashing blockbuster.
