Thousands without power as severe thunderstorms cross central Alabama

Alabama Power estimated close to 5,480 Montgomery County customers were without service at 8 p.m. Thursday evening as a line of severe thunderstorms hammered the state.

An Alabama Power spokesperson said there are more than 115,000 outages statewide and the numbers continue to fluctuate as the storm line pushes through the state.

Here's an update on central Alabama outages:

Wilcox County (3,200 customers)
Tallapoosa County (2,500 customers)
Butler County (2,200 customers)
Elmore County (2,000 customers)
Dallas County (1,900 customers)
Lowndes County (1,900 customers)
Lee County (1,500 customers)
Chilton County (760 customers)
Perry County (620 customers)
Autauga County (200 customers)
Bullock County (100 customers)
Alabama Power crews are continuing to work to restore power as quickly and safely as possible.
Alabama Power offered the following safety tips when dealing with a power outage:

Never touch any downed or low hanging wires. Assume all wire is energized.
Never try to make your own repairs to Alabama Power equipment. Let crews do the work.
Never pull tree limbs off power lines.
Do not go into areas with debris or downed trees. Energized power lines may be buried and not visible.
Avoid areas where power crews are at work.
