NRL Sunday in round nine saw the Dragons rough up the Storm in Kogarah and the Roosters hold on for a gritty two-point win at Allianz Stadium.
THERE can no longer be any doubt that St George Illawarra is the real deal in 2018 after the Dragons belted Melbourne off the park on Sunday. The Dragons ran away to a 32-14 win to cement their spot on top of the NRL ladder.
The big result was overshadowed by a bizarre referee blunder which saw Melbourne skipper Cameron Smith flabbergasted when Josh Addo-Carr was denied a first half try.
The star Melbourne winger crossed for what appeared to be his double, only for the play to be called back because of a penalty against the Dragons in the play- the-ball.
League great Braith Anasta called it “diabolical” and “one of the worst calls I’ve ever seen in a game” on the Fox League broadcast while Smith queried why play wasn’t allowed to go on.
“They said there was a penalty by the defence as the play-the-ball happened and they needed to make a decision there,” Smtih said.
“I see penalties all the time that have to be given to an attacking team and they let the play roll on.
“It was a strange one. It was a really really strange one today.”
Both Storm mentor Craig Bellamy and Dragons coach Paul McGregor said the referees got it right by the letter of the law.
Meanwhile, the struggling Roosters and Sea Eagles produced a grandstand finish in Sunday’s late game with the Roosters holding on for a tough 22-20 win which consigned Manly to its worst start to a season in 21 years.

Manly falls to worst season start since 1999
The Sydney Roosters have compounded further misery into Manly’s disastrous season, recovering from a slow start to hold out for a 22-20 win at Allianz Stadium.
After Manly fired to lead 10-0 early, the Roosters clawed it back 14-14 at half- time and took the lead shortly after through a surging Jared Waerea-Hargreaves try.
From there, the Roosters never let the advantage slip as they climbed back into the top eight.
The Sea Eagles looked by far the most likely in attack for the majority of the second half, but could only get themselves back within two with four minutes to play when Akuila Uate crossed out wide.
