All the scenarios: Socceroos' World Cup fate could come down to a raffle

So, it’s come down to this. With one game left in the group stage of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, the Socceroos still have a pulse ahead of their must-win clash against Peru in Sochi on Wednesday.

There’s no more room for honourable losses or gallant draws, only three points will do this time around if Australia want to make it to the knockout stage for just the second time in their history.
However, unfortunately, the Socceroos’ fate isn’t entirely in their own hands. Not only do they need to win, but they need France to do them a favour by beating Denmark in their final group game, too.

So, if Australia lose to, or draw with, Peru, they are heading home for the third consecutive World Cup before the round of 16 gets under way.

Australia will also make an early departure from Russia if Denmark claim a draw or win against France.

And if France win, Australia win, Australia end up with the same goal difference as Denmark but finish with a lower goal tally, Australia will not progress in that scenario either.

How Australia qualify

If Bert van Marwijk’s men beat Peru, then there are a couple of scenarios that would help them grab second spot and progress past the group stage for the first time since 2006.
